Walled City Brewery is located in the regenerated Ebrington, just up from the Peace Bridge that takes you across the River Foyle from the Guildhall. Ebrington used to be the site of the Barracks was a Naval base and it housed some of the American Army during the second World War.
The site has been restructured and is now a public space, hosting concerts open air during the Summer months. The Walled City Brewery is the first commercial tenant in the outlying buildings and hopes to be joined soon by others including retailers and a hotel.
The space looks over at the old city and the views are lovely. We walked across the bridge on a fairly bright but bitterly cold and windy day in November. The stroll across the bridge didn’t take too long but although the views are stunning, I didn’t take too long to absorb them due to the cutting wind.
On arrival at the brewery, we were met by the owner, James Huey, a master brewer who spent 12 years working for Guinness. He has now moved home to his native Derry along with his wife, Louise and young family. His sisters also work in the brewery so it’s a real family affair.
I had the burger and I can say it was the best I’ve ever tasted, really excellent local ingredients and accompanied by the beers brewed on site, it was a great way to warm up after the walk. The tour was fairly short but the tasting was great. There were four beers brewed on site and some other Irish craft beers for sale at the bar. It would have been lovely to stay for the afternoon rather than brave the weather outside again but unfortunately, work had to be done… I’ll definitely be back though!
