Leap Castle
Acknowledged to be Ireland’s most haunted castle, Leap Castle in County Offaly was built in the 13th Century on a strategic site at the Great Pass through the Slieve Bloom Mountains to Munster. The castle was built by the O’Carrolls as their main stronghold. The castle is haunted by a few different ghosts as a result of various gory murders committed there. One story is that one of the O’Carrolls killed a guest at the dinner table. Another story is of the ‘murdered woman’, who appears and screams. She was stabbed by one of two of the O’Carroll Brothers who were fighting over her, one of them ran after her and stabbed her in a hallway.
The castle is privately owned and the tours are booked with Sean Ryan, the present owner of the castle.
