A Visit to Kylemore Abbey
Kylemore Abbey is thought of as one of the most romantic castles in Ireland thanks to its wonderful location and stunning scenery that surrounds it. When you visit this Gothic castle you will feel as though you are in another world as it is so peaceful and tranquil and away from the strains of everyday life.
You can get here from Mayo or Galway and in addition to the castle there is also the Victorian Walled Garden to explore that covers six acres of land. You are able to go on amazing walks through the woodland, learn more about the history of the castle that is now home to Benedictine Nuns and has been since 1920 and marvel at the architecture of the building. Notre Dame University have purchased the Abbey recently to operate some of their overseas courses. This has resulted in extra funding being available for restorative works.
The castle is open all year and is ideal for groups, couples or families who love the outdoors and history. There is also a craft shop to buy gifts next to the castle and if you have been exploring the woodland you will want to get some refreshments in the restaurant and tea rooms.
So if you want to get out in the open and really experience some history, Kylemore Abbey has everything that you would be looking for and more. It’s easy to spend most of the day here if you take in the walk to the Victorian Walled Garden or a hike into the hills.
